Minehead set for new taxi ranks

Minehead in Somerset is set to get two new taxi ranks, it has been reported.

According to the Somerset County Gazette, the two new ranks will be the area's first newly opened ranks for more than 30 years.

The source notes that cabbies have previously expressed concern over road safety for pedestrians and drivers at the existing rank in the town, which is outside the town hall.

Now, it is hoped that the new ranks will help to improve safety and reduce the congestion which is often seen outside the hall.

The new ranks will be at 44 The Parade and outside 8 The Avenue, across the road from the Iceland store, the source notes.

At the first rank there will be two new spaces and at the second there will be three.

Revellers on a night out in the area will be able to take advantage of the second rank, which is set to be open for 24 hours.

Meanwhile, there have been problems in Cambridge recently over cabbies picking up fares outside designated ranks, the Cambridge Evening News reported.
