Strike action for Chelmsford cabbies

Taxi drivers in Chelmsford have held an immediate strike following the local council's decision not to stop increasing licence numbers in the area.

Local newspaper the Chelmsford Weekly News reported Chelmsford Taxi Association (CTA) has called for all it members to stop working after Chelmsford Borough Council officials said they would not introduce a limit on the number of licences it grants.

Terry Michel, secretary of the CTA, told the paper: "We are very angry because they have not listened to what we have said. They have just paid lip service to all the issues."

Drivers in the area claim they are already facing bankruptcy and an inability to pay taxi insurance premiums due to a lack of work.

Elsewhere, taxi drivers in Bolton recently held an impromptu protest outside the local police station over the fact they were being told they could not park on one of the busiest streets in the town, a place where many claim they had been parking for years and is a well-known place to find a taxi.
